The Greenwich Police Department is hosting the annual Youth Citizens Police Academy this week

This summer, the Greenwich Police Department’s Youth Citizens Police Academy celebrates its 10th anniversary, giving dozens of 7th, 8th and 9th graders a first-hand look at what it takes to pursue a career in law enforcement.

“Most of them won’t become police officers, but there may be a few who are interested, and that would be great,” says Greenwich Police Chief James Heavey. “Hopefully they’ll develop that interest further by getting involved in the community.”

The five-day course teaches self-defense, gun safety, forensics, crime scene investigation and more.

“It gives you an insight into the benefits of being a police officer,” says Eliza Cornelius of Greenwich. “In my opinion, it’s just really fun overall.”

The camp ends on Friday.
