One dead after accident in Pleasant Township on Monday

A motorcyclist died at the scene of an accident Monday afternoon in Pleasant Township where he collided with a dump truck, police said. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

The Porter County Coroner’s Office expects to release the motorcyclist’s identity after an autopsy on Wednesday, the office said.

Officers with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department were called at approximately 3:51 p.m. on June 24 for a reported accident involving a dump truck and a motorcycle on Indiana 8 at Baums Bridge Road, according to a news release from Sergeant Ben McFalls, the department’s press secretary.

Initial investigations and witness testimony indicate that the motorcycle was traveling east on Indiana 8 and the dump truck was traveling west on Indiana 8. Both were approaching the intersection with Baums Bridge Road.

The dump truck driver told police he turned left off center to avoid a rear-end collision with an unidentified SUV that failed to yield and entered his lane on Indiana 8. The SUV entered the dump truck’s lane after turning off Baums Bridge Road, police said.

As the truck turned into the eastbound lane, it struck the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The Porter County Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating.
