1 dead after police-involved shooting in Birmingham apartment complex

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – A man died Monday night following a police-involved shooting.

The incident occurred in the 34,000 block of 7th Court South outside an apartment complex.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., Birmingham officers responded to a disturbance call. When they arrived on the scene, they learned that a man was involved in an altercation with a police officer. The man was taken to UAB with a gunshot wound, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating whether the victim was armed at the time of the altercation.

According to Police Chief Scott Thurmond, the officer had his body camera turned on at the time.

Chief Thurmond says the officer will be placed on leave as per protocol while ALEA conducts the investigation.
