27 people arrested for lying in attack on man for desecrating Quran – Firstpost

Videos circulating on social media show a mob surrounding a burning body in the middle of the street, as well as a large number of people outside a police station.

In a horrific incident in Pakistan’s Swat region, a man was allegedly burnt alive by a mob because he was accused of violating the Holy Quran.

According to ARY News on Sunday, police arrested 27 people, including two brothers.

The incident occurred on June 20 in Madyan, a popular tourist destination in Swat district, 340 kilometers from Islamabad, the country’s capital.

According to Zahidullah Khan, the Swat District Police Officer (DPO), police had taken the suspect in the alleged desecration incident to the police station, but an aggressive mob “attacked the police station and took away the suspect.”

“People set fire to the police station and a mobile vehicle,” the DPO said, adding that the suspect was “set on fire.”

Videos doing the rounds on social media show a mob surrounding a burning body in the middle of the road and a large number of people outside a police station. Dawn.com’s correspondent has asked the police to confirm the footage, Dawn reported.

DPO Khan said a large police force was deployed in Madyan and was trying to bring the tense situation under control.

In addition, police teams are conducting raids to make further arrests in connection with the Madyan incident.

Previously, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal had condemned the lynching in the Swat Valley and called for an end to this “street justice”.

Ahsan Iqbal described the incident as horrific during the budget debate in the National Assembly.

Ahsan said Parliament must take strong note of the lynching as it had brought Pakistan “to the brink of destruction”.

“We must take note of this incident. We have now reached a point where religion is being used as a justification for mob violence and street justice, which is a blatant violation of the Constitution, the law and the state,” he lamented.

According to Dawn, at least 2,120 people were charged with blasphemy between 1987 and 2022.

Last month, police in Sargodha rescued a Christian from angry mobs accusing him of desecrating the Holy Quran. He succumbed to his injuries nine days later.

In 2022, a middle-aged man was stoned to death by a mob in a remote village in Khanewal district for allegedly desecrating God.
