Labour suspends strike for five days – Worldstage

WorldStage Newsonline – Nigeria’s trade unions, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have suspended their nationwide strike for five days to allow for uninterrupted meetings with the trilateral committee on the new national minimum wage.

TUC President Festus Osifo made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja after a joint extraordinary meeting of the unions’ national executive council. A communiqué will be issued shortly, the union leader said.

Following the meeting with the FG Tripartite Committee scheduled for 10am today (Tuesday), Labour has decided to suspend the strike. Consequently, all government and private offices are expected to reopen and operate as usual.

This development represents a crucial step towards resolving the minimum wage issue and ensures that the Trilateral Committee can work towards an acceptable setting of a national minimum wage without further disruption.

Both unions went on strike on Monday to express their displeasure over the increase in electricity prices and the lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

Construction work in key economic sectors came to a standstill, schools, businesses, hospitals and airports had to close. The power grid was also switched off, plunging the country into darkness.
