A teenager shot another in a Miami-Dade courtyard Saturday morning, police say

Two teenagers were sitting together in a courtyard in Florida City on Saturday morning. Ten hours later, one of them was dead and the other was arrested for murder.

Damarion Bailey was 15 years old. Police say he was shot by Jeron Smith, who has been arrested twice for a serious crime in the six months since his 18th birthday.

Smith is being held in Miami-Dade Corrections on a second-degree murder charge. The murder charge alone prevents Smith from being released on bail, but he was already free on bail. Smith was arrested in April on a charge of possession of a weapon by a felon or felon and was ordered to post $7,500 bail on May 22.

The arrest warrant says Saturday’s tragedy began when Bailey and Smith were sitting in the yard of 434 NW 13th St. in Florida City and two people rode by on bicycles. Smith, the report says, began shooting at them, although he acted “without provocation.”

The men on the bicycles dropped their bikes and ran, the report said. Bailey was shot in the head while Smith “fired and retreated toward his residence.”

Smith, the report said, waived his right to remain silent and made “a detailed, videotaped confession of his involvement” in Bailey’s death.

According to police, Smith confirmed that the 9mm gun police found hidden behind an air conditioning unit was the weapon he fired on Saturday.
