Mayor of Medical Lake suspends fireworks for rest of year

The people of Medical Lake need to rethink their Independence Day plans.

MEDICAL LAKE, Washington – Medical Lake Mayor Terri Cooper has ordered a fireworks ban effective immediately for the remainder of 2024.

During a council meeting on June 4, the Medical Lake City Council supported the mayor’s decision to temporarily suspend the sale, use and discharge of fireworks within city limits.

The decision was made to protect the public health and safety of the community.

The suspension of fireworks was in remembrance of the Gray Road Fire, which occurred on August 18, 2023. Residents of Medical Lake are still in shock after 11,000 acres of land were destroyed. In total, 240 homes and over 100 other buildings were destroyed. Thousands of residents are still actively affected by the aftermath of the fire.

With Independence Day next month, the City understands that this suspension will disrupt some Independence Day plans. However, it is hoped that with the order now in place, Medical Lake residents will have time to make new arrangements for the holiday.
