Strange badminton accident kills 6-year-old New Jersey girl on vacation

A 6-year-old Sussex County girl has died in a shocking accident during a family vacation in Maine.

According to the girl’s father, Jesse Morgan, an accident occurred on Saturday as the Morgan family enjoyed the last full day of their trip to the lake.

“We had a quick lunch by the lake and the kids decided to try badminton in the front yard,” Morgan wrote in a blog post. “Bethany (Lucy’s mom) and I were relaxing in the back when we heard screaming.”

According to Morgan, a bat broke while Lucy was “sitting on the sidelines” when one of her siblings swung the ball downfield, and a sharp piece of the bat became lodged in Lucy’s skull.

“She was still breathing but did not respond as I held her and Bethany cried out to God,” the blog says.

Morgan, pastor of a church in Rockaway Township, kept the public updated in a series of posts on his New Creation Living page.

The updates stopped after Lucy died at a Maine hospital around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

The family “prayed for a miracle,” Morgan’s blog said, but the prognosis was grim from the start.

The Morgan family comes from the Stockholm district of Hardyston Township.

According to an online GoFundMe campaign, Lucy’s funeral is planned for June 15th and will be livestreamed at this link.

The GoFundMe campaign, launched before Lucy’s death, has raised more than $88,000 as of Friday afternoon.
