Atlanta water crisis | Latest updates Wednesday

11Alive continues to monitor updates on water main breaks and site closures across the city of Atlanta.

Atlanta residents are hours away from having water again after five days due to Friday’s water main breaks, which left thousands under boil water notices .

According to the city Tuesday, the estimated time for the water system to return to normal is between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday. The boil water advisory is still in effect.

For a complete and detailed map of the neighborhoods and streets affected, click here. Over the weekend, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens declared the city under a state of emergency.

The City of Atlanta Watershed Management announced Monday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be there Tuesday to help resolve the crisis.

“They will help us develop a plan to assess our aging infrastructure,” Dickens said.

Dickens promised updates every two hours on the progress of repairs until all water lines are completely repaired Saturday. 11Alive is tracking these updates below and building closures around the city.

4:49 a.m. | Journalist Rarione Maniece gives the latest morning news from 11Alive

4 a.m. | Water is expected to be restored to residents between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to the city, Tuesday. The boil advisory is still in effect until the state Division of Environmental Protection determines it can be lifted.

Tuesday June 4

10:00 p.m. | Atlanta Public Schools said summer schools and programs will remain closed Wednesday at Midtown High School, Howard Middle School, Mary Lin Elementary School, Hope-Hill Elementary School, Whitefoord Inc. and Coan Middle School.

8:46 p.m. | The City of Atlanta has released an update on water system issues. Repairs continue at West Peachtree St. and 11th St. A 30-inch pipe was successfully lowered into the hold and steps to restore water service have been completed. It also activated smaller valves on 11th Street. Water is flowing freely at the Marriott Residence Inn and the Eleventh Street Pub.

The estimated time for the water system to return to normal is between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday. The boil water advisory is still in effect.

Water main break repair is also complete at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and JP Brawley Drive.

7:01 p.m. | Atlanta City Council Member Liliana Bakhtiari took to social media to provide an update on the water situation. She said the main street at 11th Street is being replaced. Once this is completed, the system will need to be pressurized before the water safety can be tested.

For an accurate reading, newly pressurized line water should be incubated for 18 hours. After that period, the city will share its testing results with the state Division of Environmental Protection, which will then determine whether the boil water notice can be lifted.

2:30 p.m. | Crews are investigating a possible water main break at Martin Luther King Dr and Bakers Ferry Rd SW. Officials said there may be a temporary interruption of water service to residents and businesses in the area.

2:12 p.m. | Crews are responding to emergency water repairs at Clayton Rd NE and Armor Dr NE. Water service was temporarily interrupted to a fire hydrant in the area.

13 hours | The City of Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATL DOT) has issued a reminder regarding a road closure on a portion of West Peachtree Street NE as Department of Watershed Management (DWM) crews complete a water main repair at the corner of 11th Street NE and West. Peachtree Street NE.

Officials said West Peachtree Street NE is still closed from north of 10th Street NE to 12th Street NE.

ATL DOT would like to remind drivers and pedestrians that this portion of the road will remain closed until repairs are completed. Officials advise motorcyclists and pedestrians to stay away from the construction zone between 10th Street NE and 12th Street NE.
