Rape: Deaf-mute girl raped in Jajpur district | News from Bhubaneswar

Kendrapada: A 19-year-old deaf-mute girl was allegedly raped by a man in a village in Jajpur district on Sunday. The victim’s mother filed a complaint at the local police station on Sunday evening after her daughter narrated her ordeal in sign language. According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Tungura Mallick (26), raped the girl when she was answering nature’s call in a field near her house. The police have filed a charge against the accused under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and have started an investigation. The survivor was immediately taken to a local government hospital for medical examination. “The accused fled from the village,” said Anshumala Das, inspector-in-charge of the local police station. The police have taken the help of sign language interpreters to ensure effective communication with the girl. In 2019, the state government employed sign language interpreters at police stations to assist people with hearing and speech impairments in recording their statements and filing reports.
