Former dean of Vanguard High School jailed for sex offenses against students, police said

A former dean of Vanguard High School has been accused by several students of making sexual advances toward them. Among other things, he asked some female students to expose their breasts and groped others.

On Friday, May 31, Ocala police arrested 42-year-old Gregory Ramputi, who had resigned from his job at Vanguard High School the week before.

According to OPD, a 12th grade student spoke to a school safety officer in early May and reported that Ramputi had had “inappropriate contact” with several students, including herself, on multiple occasions during her time in high school.

OPD stated that four other female students also came forward and made similar allegations against Ramputi. According to police, Ramputi allegedly asked these students to “expose their breasts” in his office, and one of the victims claimed he “made statements about sexual activity.”

Some of the victims also alleged that Ramputi groped them on multiple occasions, and one of the victims further stated that Ramputi performed “sexual acts” with her. In addition, during the course of an investigation, law enforcement learned that Ramputi had asked to see nude photos of a female student on at least one occasion, which he allegedly viewed.

According to OPD, Ramputi’s alleged sexual misconduct toward students occurred over a period of several years, both on and off school grounds.

Ramputi faces the following charges: five counts of offenses against students by a person of authority, five counts of unauthorized sexual contact with certain minors, three counts of traveling to meet with minors, two counts of indecent, lewd or lascivious touching of certain minors and one count of possession of child pornography.

In a press release, Marion County Public Schools said they are cooperating with law enforcement and the investigation.

According to MCPS, Ramputi started teaching in the school district at North Marion Middle School in 2014. He moved to Vanguard High School the following year and became the director of student services there in 2021.

During Ramputi’s time at MCPS, which ended on May 21, 2024, he received no letters of reprimand or discipline.

Following Ramputi’s arrest, Ocala Police issued the following statement:

“This is an alarming reminder that even some people in positions of power and trust can be corrupt, and it is a powerful incentive to remain vigilant and ensure that those in authority are held accountable for their actions. Student safety is our top priority and we have zero tolerance for this gross misconduct. We commend the students who had the courage to report this behavior. We ask that anyone who has experienced similar behavior from Mr. Ramputi report it immediately to law enforcement.”
