Man arrested, 50 pounds of meth seized in Salt Lake County.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A suspected drug dealer was arrested Thursday on charges of illegal drug trafficking after police seized more than 50 pounds of methamphetamine at several locations in Salt Lake County.

Fermin Castro Tovar, 25, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on three counts of trafficking in controlled substances (second-degree felonies).

According to a probable cause statement, Castro Tovar delivered “controlled substances” to a confidential source in May, and police monitored Castro Tovar’s activities after the transaction. On May 30, agents from the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force, along with FBI agents, executed search warrants at three different locations associated with Castro Tovar.

Police executed the first search warrant in Castro Tovar’s storage room, where officers found about 25 pounds of suspected methamphetamine.

Castro Tovar was later arrested on his way back to his apartment. After agreeing to speak to police, Castro Tovar admitted that he had six pounds of meth at home.

Police told Castro Tovar that they were investigating him and the drug trafficking organization he allegedly worked for. Castro Tovar admitted to police that he coordinated the delivery of the meth to the storage unit and was responsible for the drugs.

“He stated that he was coordinated and directed by a supply source in Mexico,” the affidavit states. “He admitted to distributing methamphetamine in the Salt Lake County area approximately twice a week.”

Police also questioned Castro Tovar about an apartment he had visited. He was told he was frequently followed there. Castro Tovar said he used the apartment to store drugs and that no one lived there.

Inside the apartment, officers found about 15 pounds of meth in a large garbage bag and another five pounds or so in a suitcase.

“Castro Tovar admitted that these were the pounds of methamphetamine he brought to the target apartment after picking it up from a drug courier two days earlier,” the affidavit states.

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) agents said Castro Tovar had been deported in the past and they took him into custody for the immigration side of the investigation.

The charges are merely allegations. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
