GJHS Academic Team Ends Season at Quiz Bowl in Atlanta | Western Colorado

The Grand Junction High School Academic Team capped off another strong year of accomplishments in Atlanta this past weekend, competing in the Quiz Bowl National Championship Tournament.

The Tigers, who are coming off a second straight Knowledge Bowl national title under coach Coady Shawcroft, sent two teams to Atlanta for the Quiz Bowl, a game where teams of four students use buzzers to answer questions. questions on a variety of topics. The two Grand Junction teams were among 320 participants from 38 states, Washington, D.C. and China participating in the event.

Of the four Colorado teams participating in the tournament, two were from Grand Junction High School.

The A team — consisting of Alexander Chang, Stewart Collins, Samuel Guddat and Maddie Kawasaki — finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-5 record and finished in 153rd place. The B team – made up of Macy McComb, Brendan Schwarz, Neil Scott, Erik TerLouw and Jamison Whiteford – went 4-6 in the preliminary rounds.

Team A reached the 20th round of the preliminary rounds, thanks to a 235-220 victory over Greenhill B of Addison, Texas, in the 15th round, but their opportunity to make the tournament playoffs ended in defeat 210-200 against Herron. from Indianapolis.

The B team’s victories included close victories on the brink of elimination against Wade Hampton B of Greenville, South Carolina, Olentangy Berlin of Delaware and Arab of Alabama. They were ultimately eliminated in the 17th round by Chamblee Charter of Georgia.

Barrington High School of Illinois won the tournament championship.
