1 dead in accident in San Joaquin County

According to police, there was a head-on collision on Highway 12 between two cars, which were then hit by another car.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. – One person was killed in a crash on Highway 12 in San Joaquin County Tuesday afternoon.

The accident was reported around 4:10 p.m. along Highway 12, west of Guard Road.

CHP spokesman Angel Arseo said a Volkswagen Passat and a Honda Accord were traveling in opposite directions until the Volkswagen crossed the double yellow line into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the Honda. It is unclear why the Volkswagen crossed into the other lane.

After the accident, a Toyota Prius also crashed into the cars. While the Honda and the Volkswagen remained on the road, the Toyota continued driving and eventually ended up in a ditch.

The Volkswagen driver died after the accident, the Honda driver suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Prius suffered minor injuries.

CHP said all drivers were wearing seat belts. It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
