Man rapes granddaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison

The POCSO court in Visakhapatnam has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison and a fine of Rs 500,000 for raping his granddaughter multiple times. The court pronounced the verdict on May 27, 2024, after completing the hearing of a case filed at Malkapuram police station in 2019. According to the prosecution, the 12-year-old girl lived with her parents and grandparents in a two-storey building in Malkapuram. The girl went to study on the second floor where her grandfather Syamsundar (63) lived.

One day, the girl’s sister was shocked to see her grandfather sexually abusing the minor. When her mother found out about it, she shouted at the girl. She explained that this was not the first time and that the old man had been doing this for the past few days. He threatened to kill everyone in the house if she told anyone.

The girl’s mother lodged a complaint about her granddaughter’s rape with the Malkapuram police, who registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. City police commissioner A. Ravi Shankar thanked public prosecutor K. Krishna and investigating officer K. Ranga Raju for their sincere efforts in trying the case expeditiously. The police commissioner further said the conviction rate should increase as compared to the past.
