School teacher suspended for WhatsApp inactivity

Vijayawada: Secondary school teacher L. Ramesh of BSRKMC High School in Vijayawada has been suspended for insubordination following his alleged refusal to follow instructions circulated through a school WhatsApp group.

Ramesh reportedly left the school’s WhatsApp group and failed to follow timely instructions from higher authorities since April 22, 2024. These instructions circulated through the WhatsApp group reportedly came from both the District School Superintendent and the Principal Secretary, School Education.

When the school principal questioned Ramesh about his inactivity, he cited a doctor’s verbal advice to avoid mobile phones and WhatsApp due to eyestrain. However, the school principal noted that there were no official medical documents to support this claim.

The principal’s report states that Ramesh’s actions amounted to “gross negligence, recklessness and disobedience” to superiors. Furthermore, the report questions Ramesh’s “integrity and dedication” to his duties.

Based on this report, the District Education Commissioner suspended UV Subba Rao Ramesh on May 23 with immediate effect.

The suspension falls under sub-clause (1) of item 8 of the AP Civil Services (CCA) Rules, 1991. Ramesh will remain suspended until the disciplinary proceedings are completed or all case-related proceedings are quashed. The suspension order prohibits Ramesh from leaving his headquarters without prior permission of the DEO. During the suspension, he will be paid a daily allowance of half his leave pay.
