A Red Deer man was killed in a workplace incident after a steel beam and a semi-truck collided

Police are investigating after an Alberta man died in a workplace incident north of Airdrie, Alta., on Tuesday.

In a news release, Airdrie RCMP said they were called to the northbound lanes of Highway 2, about 10 kilometers north of Airdrie, Tuesday evening.

Police said construction crews were removing steel beams from the roadway and loading them onto a trailer when one of the beams “went into the lane” and was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer.

A 37-year-old construction worker from Red Deer was struck in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Due to the construction work, northbound traffic was already reduced to one lane. All northbound traffic on Highway 2 was stopped for approximately three hours following the incident as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHS) conducted its investigation.

According to police, the driver of the truck remained at the scene of the accident. The investigation is ongoing and the name of the deceased will not be released.
