David’s evening forecast – Several days of intense heat ahead

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – The streak of very warm and humid days continued Sunday. Clouds rolled in during the afternoon, helping to spare the area the worst of the heat for another day. A small storm cloud formed in northeastern Nebraska, affecting the Wayne area and then passing north of Onawa and Denison. This storm cloud will continue to move east, staying away from the Omaha metropolis. Temperatures have risen to the high 30s in most parts of the metropolis, with heat index readings in the 90s and 100s. As the sun goes down, temperatures will drop back into the high 30s around 8 p.m. and will drop to around 27 degrees by 10 p.m.

First warning forecast for Sunday evening

With clear skies and a light breeze from the south overnight, temperatures should drop back to 21-25 degrees Celsius by Monday morning. If you’re outdoors early in the morning, it should be relatively pleasant but a little muggy. It will heat up quickly, however, as skies will be mostly sunny throughout the day. This means we’re unlikely to have the afternoon cloud cover to protect us from the more intense heat that we’ve had over the past few days. Temperatures should be in the high 30s by midday, with highs of 35-37 degrees Celsius in the afternoon.

Although temperatures will be just a few degrees above average for this time of year, a slight increase in humidity is expected by Monday afternoon. The combination of heat and humidity will make conditions outside even more uncomfortable. The heat index will rise above 100 degrees by early afternoon, and in the Omaha metropolitan area, we’ll likely see highs between 102 and 104 degrees.

Even hotter temperatures are expected for Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs ranging from 35 to 40 degrees. Wednesday will likely be the warmest, with highs around 37 degrees in the Omaha metropolitan area. In some areas further south and west, temperatures could reach as high as 38 degrees. Given the humidity, heat index readings will likely be between 40 and 43 degrees, with the heat again at its warmest on Wednesday.

A cold front will move through Wednesday night, bringing scattered thunderstorms and slightly less hot weather. Highs should drop back below 35 degrees from Thursday and last until at least Saturday. It will still be hot and humid, however, so we don’t expect any significant cooling. In fact, temperatures could even rise above 35 degrees again early next week.
