Telangana Women Safety Wing’s sexual offences module results in 49 convictions

The Women Safety Wing (WSW) of Telangana has set up a special Sexual Offences (SO) module to monitor rape and sexual assault cases across the state. The module has resulted in 49 convictions in the last few years, including 12 this year.

The module identifies special cases based on specific criteria, including cases involving repeat offenders, those that attract media attention, serious crimes in public spaces, gang rapes and crimes involving children or people with disabilities, an official press release said. “The module also focuses on serious sexual assaults with penetration on children under the age of ten and serious crimes committed by officials in official institutions,” the press release said.

“The recent 12 convictions included two life sentences, one for 25 years, five for 20 years, one for 5 years and in three cases one year of community service. The units affected include Hyderabad, Jagityal, Karimnagar and Rachakonda,” the press release said.

The WSW has developed a comprehensive 29-column form to collect detailed information on each special case from the unit’s officers. An officer with the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police heads a special task force that closely monitors these investigations and processes.
