Investigation begins after MPD trooper hits man killed in hit-and-run

MILWAUKEE – An investigation is underway after a Milwaukee police patrol car found the body of a 57-year-old man in the street while responding to another incident.

According to MPD, two officers encountered a hostage situation early Saturday morning when their patrol car struck the body on North Avenue near 14th Street. The accident occurred just after 2:30 a.m.

Investigators were able to determine that the person was already dead before being struck by the patrol car. He was first struck by an older black SUV that fled the scene.

“The Milwaukee Police Department would like to extend its sincere condolences to the victim’s family, friends and everyone affected by this tragic incident,” police said in a statement.

According to Milwaukee police, the two officers in the patrol car were a 38-year-old with more than four years of service and a 25-year-old with more than six years of service. Both have been assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

Milwaukee police are currently searching for the SUV and its driver. There has been no update on the hostage situation.
