The John F. Kennedy Center’s honorees this year include director Francis Ford Coppola, blues singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt and legendary rock band The Grateful Dead, the center announced Thursday.

The lifetime achievement awards are presented at the 47th annual ceremony in Washington in December, which is traditionally attended by the sitting president.

Coppola, whose award-winning films include The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, said the award was recognition for those who have worked with him.

“I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with amazing artists and wonderful people throughout my career, and I have never stopped learning,” he said in a statement. “There is no greater honor than to be among those who have inspired me, looked up to me, and encouraged me in difficult times.”

The Grateful Dead are represented by their surviving members Mickey Hart, Billy Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bobby Weir.

Other honorees this year include jazz musician Arturo Sandoval and the Apollo Theater in New York City. The Apollo is the first institution to receive this honor, having been an iconic place for the launch and celebration of music careers for 90 years.

Previous winners include Gladys Knight, U2, Dick Van Dyke, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Carlos Santana and Bette Midler.

The 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors will air on December 3 on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
