Ohio: Police shoot suspect near Republican National Convention venue

Ohio police officers reportedly shot and killed a suspect in Milwaukee, about a mile from the Republican National Convention. Columbus police officers were in town to provide additional security for the convention. According to sister station WISN, police reportedly shot and killed a person near 14th and Vliet streets in Milwaukee, about 1.2 miles from Fiserv Forum, the RNC’s main venue. Witnesses told WISN 12 News that two men were fighting in King Park and one of them pulled out a knife. The witnesses said the men were startled by so many police officers responding. Witnesses say multiple police officers shot the man with the knife. This has not yet been confirmed by police. The Milwaukee County Coroner’s Office confirmed at 2:50 p.m. that it was called to the scene and a man died. There is a large police presence, including the Secret Service, on the scene. WISN 12 News sources say the police cordon was extended to 17th and Vliet streets. The officers involved in the shooting are not from the Milwaukee Police Department, but from Columbus, Ohio. A statement from the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police said no officers were injured. Police from 63 departments in 24 states and Washington, D.C., as well as 44 Wisconsin agencies, are in Milwaukee this week for the Republican National Convention. Cincinnati sent over two dozen officers on Saturday. WISN 12 News political director Matt Smith spoke at the RNC with Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who said he was just being briefed on the situation. The incident itself does not appear to be related to the RNC.

The officers involved in the shooting are not from the Milwaukee Police Department, but are from Columbus, Ohio.
