3-year-old girl in Harlem with her family killed by car driver on crosswalk, police said

A three-year-old girl was fatally struck by a car with her mother and siblings on Thursday evening as she crossed a street in Manhattan, police said

Jaynelyse Valdez, along with the child’s 37-year-old mother and two other young siblings, were in the crosswalk at West 135th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem around 7:30 p.m. when they were struck by a 40-year-old man driving a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder, police said.

Officials said the driver of the Nissan was traveling south and was able to turn left on a green light, while the family was given the right of way to cross West 135th Street on a clear pedestrian light.

According to the police report, the driver of the Nissan Valdez grabbed her and took her to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. NYPD officials said she was unconscious and unresponsive at the scene of the accident and suffered serious injuries.

Valdez’s two-year-old brother and four-month-old brother were also taken to Harlem Hospital with minor injuries, as was their mother, who was not seriously injured.

According to officials, the family lived in New Rochelle.

Police said there were no immediate arrests.
