A man armed with a machete attacks his neighbors in Switzerland and injures 4

GENEVA — GENEVA (AP) — A man armed with a machete attacked several people in the building where he lives in northeastern Switzerland, wounding four people, including a baby, police said Friday.

Police in St. Gallen were informed of the incident shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. They said the suspect, a 34-year-old Swiss man, had attempted to attack a pregnant woman as she was visiting her father, who lived in the building. Her 66-year-old father was seriously injured as he rushed to her aid.

Neighbors who noticed what was happening followed the attacker out of the building, where he injured a 31-year-old resident, police said. She had her three-month-old baby with her, who was also injured. Neighbors were able to detain the attacker until police arrived and arrested him, but one person who came to his aid was injured.

The suspect also injured himself in the incident, police said, adding that no one’s life was in danger.

Investigators found a flammable liquid and gas in the suspect’s apartment and evacuated the building. Police said the man was previously known to them as a man with mental health issues.
