Incident report released on May 10th “group disturbance” at Lawton Correctional Facility

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections have released the Incident Notification Report regarding the “group disturbance” that resulted in the deaths of at least two inmates.

While the report lists all personnel involved, the names of the inmates, including those who died, have been redacted.

According to the report, the inmate-to-inmate assault occurred at 4:35 p.m. It states that Unit 4 continued recreational activities at the same time Unit 2C finished its recreational activities.

During this exchange, several inmates from Unit 2C walked through one of the gym areas, pushed Sergeant Vaughn out of the way, and began “attacking and stabbing inmates from Unit 4.”

The fight continued after the order to stop was given. The officers then used pepper spray, seemingly ending the situation.

The first rescue crews arrived less than 20 minutes later, at 4:54 a.m., and Life Flight flew an inmate to OU Medical.

One inmate was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m., another at 5:17 p.m.

According to the report, both families have been notified.

At 5:36 p.m., the Lawton Correctional Facility was placed on lockdown while staff conducted a special count. The count was completed approximately two and a half hours later.

The facility was sealed off for at least three days.

7News has reached out to ODOC to find out why the inmates’ names are not being released.
