If Trump had said that gays and lesbians were murderers and raped Americans, would he be allowed to host “SNL”?

“When public figures cross certain boundaries, they should lose their privileges to host television shows. At least until they apologize for their unacceptable behavior,” said Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) in a speech on the House floor this morning about NBC’s plans to have Donald Trump as anchor. Saturday Night Live.

“The installation of Trump as SNL Hosting may be good for ratings, but it’s a bigger deal than a cameo or a Tonight Show Guest (appearance). And I challenge you,” Gutierrez told NBC, standing next to a card with the hashtag #RacismIsntFunny.

“If Donald Trump had said gays and lesbians were murderers and raping Americans, would he be hosting the show?” Gutierrez scoffed.

“Trump has said some pretty bad things about women, individually and collectively – but what if he had said most women are criminals? Would writers be making up skits for Trump if he had vilified an entire gender rather than an entire ethnic group?”

Gutierrez persisted and asked: “What if he said that black people are murderers, rapists and drug dealers? Would you still be doing some light-hearted skits with Donald Trump?”

“I just want to say one last thing to (Canadian-born) producer Lorne Michaels,” Gutierrez concluded. “I wonder if you would have invited him to host the show if he had said Canadians are rapists, murderers and drug dealers.”

We have asked NBC for comment.
