Malaysian TikToker who faced rape threats found dead in residential complex

Rajeswary, known as Esha on social media, said the person used her photo and made multiple threats to “rape and kill” her and “hurt” her.

“He said that he was being supported by a gang and also asked his followers to forward the live session (link) to me,” Rajeswary said in the report.

She said that in addition to the sexual and offensive comments made by the alleged perpetrator, many of those who attended the session also hurled insults at her.

Rajeswary was one of the organizers of the mass concert of the Kanda Shasti Hymn at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple of Batu Caves in the state of Selangor last month.

Her distraught father, P. Appahu, 62, who works as a temple caretaker, said: “She was a very strong person. I cannot understand why this happened.”

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he would meet with TikTok representatives next week to discuss the management of the social media platform.

Other authorities such as the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) would also be present, he said.

“Although we have repeatedly reminded the public to be careful about the content they upload so that something like this does not happen, our claims do not seem to have been enough.

“As for the governance and management of social media platforms, I have already expressed my sadness and anger to them because they are not aware of the seriousness of cyberbullying.

“This is one of the reasons why we need to review the management of social media platforms.

Insha “Allah willing, I will convene a meeting between MCMC, TikTok, AGC and several others in a few days so that we can discuss the complaints received in detail,” Fahmi told reporters on Saturday.

The minister expressed regret upon receiving the news about the activist and said the government was determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“But we want a system change because we are not sure how many people may be suffering silently from cyberbullying,” said Fahmi.

According to MCMC, the activist did not submit a report to the commission on this specific case of cyberbullying, he said.

However, Fahmi said he knew that she had filed a complaint with the police.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said reports of online attacks and abuse have increased recently.

“The government takes these complaints very seriously.

“Steps are being taken to prevent them and to respond appropriately to such incidents when they occur,” Gobind added.

He said that relevant ministers such as himself, Fahmi, Interior Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Minister of Law and Institutional Reforms Azalina Othman Said are in the process of introducing measures and laws to combat online harm.

“I spoke to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim about this.

“We will discuss it further with the cabinet next week.

“Rest assured, urgent steps are being taken to resolve the issue,” Gobind said.

According to Gobind, the relevant bodies and authorities are focusing on building a structure to protect people from abuse or harm online, including the proper registration of social media accounts.

He advised victims of social media bullying not to suffer in silence but to come forward and file the necessary complaints with the authorities.

Sentul Deputy Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari confirmed that the victim had filed a police report citing threats she had received on social media.

“It is unfortunate that she passed away.

“But without their testimony, we cannot pursue the matter further,” he said.

Ahmad Sukarno said the woman had filed similar complaints with the police in the past.

He said complaints had also been filed against them and they were recently investigated for alleged misuse of network facilities under Section 233 of the MCMC Act.

Ahmad Sukarno said the investigation into the woman’s death was being carried out by the Gombak police in Selangor.
