Bihar: 16 engineers suspended after 10 bridges collapse in two weeks | News from India

Sixteen engineers were suspended on Thursday in connection with a series of bridge collapses in Bihar within two weeks.

The suspension came a day after a bridge collapsed in Saran on Thursday, prompting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to demand an inspection report for all under-construction and old bridges in Bihar within two weeks.

Since June 18, at least ten bridges have collapsed in Kishanganj, Araria, East Champaran, Madhubani, Siwan and Saran.

The collapse has triggered a political storm, with the Nitish Kumar government and the opposition sparring over who should be held responsible. While Works Minister Ashok Kumar Choudhary accused then Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav of failing to implement a good bridge maintenance policy during his time as the state’s Roads and Buildings Minister, Yadav retorted by saying that it was a case of “he who throws the pot in the kettle, calls the kettle black”.
