At least three people were killed when a person suspected of driving under the influence drove into a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side during Independence Day celebrations.

A group celebrating the holiday was struck by a gray Ford F-150 as it passed through an intersection and entered Corlears Hook Park around 9 p.m., New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey told reporters Thursday evening.

Two of the people hit were dead at the scene of the accident, Maddrey said.

A third death was later reported, CNN affiliates WABC, WCBS and WNBC reported. Eight others were injured, police said.

Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Thursday evening that based on preliminary investigations, it appears the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, adding that the incident did not appear to be terrorist-related.

Bystanders held the driver until rescue workers arrived, authorities said. Four people who were trapped under the truck were then rescued.

The police believe that alcohol may have played a role.

The New York Police Department said no charges have yet been filed against the suspected driver.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
