Turkey’s Orkun Kokcu will miss the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship due to a suspension

Turkish midfielder Orkun Kokcu will miss his team’s European Championship quarter-final against the Netherlands due to suspension.

The 23-year-old midfielder was shown a yellow card in the 11th minute for a foul on Christoph Baumgartner in his team’s 2-1 round of 16 win over Austria on Tuesday, having already received a yellow card in his team’s 2-1 group stage win over the Czech Republic.

Yellow cards will not be reset until after the quarter-finals of the competition, meaning that any player who receives two yellow cards in the first five matches of the tournament will be suspended for one match.

Turkey were without suspended playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and defender Samet Akaydin for their round of 16 win, but both will now return for the quarter-final match against the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.

Benfica midfielder Kokcu has scored two goals in 32 international matches for Turkey. He played in all four of his team’s games at Euro 2024.

Kokcu was substituted in the 86th minute of the win against Austria and was replaced by Fenerbahce attacking midfielder Irfan Kahveci.
