Airman who died in car crash at Malmstrom AFB identified

GREAT FALLS – The pilot who died in a one-car crash at Malmstrom Air Force Base on Saturday, June 29, 2024, has been identified as Staff Sergeant Jorge Delgado, 38, assigned to the 341st Security Forces Squadron at Malmstrom.

Malmström officials announced his name on Monday afternoon.

SSgt Delgado was one of four Airmen traveling from base to their deployment in an “armored HMMWV” (also known as a Humvee) at the time of the incident.

Two pilots from the first aid team were injured during the briefing about the accident.

Two of the injured pilots are reportedly in stable condition at a medical facility in Great Falls; three have since been released.

Details of the accident were not disclosed.

Lt. Col. Dan Voorhies, the commander of the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom, said in the release, “Team Malmstrom and our surrounding community mourn the loss of not only an outstanding Airman, but also a family member and friend. As we assist our affected Airmen and families, I urge all of us to spend a little more time checking in on one another, hugging those in need, and giving love and support so we can continue to persevere. Wing One is committed to the safety of our members and we will continue to stand strong during this time.”

(1ST REPORT, 30 JUNE) A car accident at Malmstrom Air Base on Saturday, June 29, 2024, left one pilot dead and three pilots injured.

Two pilots from the first aid team were injured during the briefing about the accident.

The name of the deceased pilot has not been released pending notification of his family.

The five injured soldiers were taken to nearby medical facilities. The nature and severity of their injuries were not disclosed.

Malmstrom officials have so far declined to release further information, such as the nature of the accident and whether the pilots were on duty at the time of the accident.

Colonel Dan Voorhies, commander of the 341st Missile Squadron at Malmstrom, said in a press release: “We will need time to mourn our lost teammate and for our injured members to heal physically and emotionally. Our focus now is to ensure that all of Team Malmstrom has the support it needs to get through this difficult time.”

The press release states: “The cause of the accident is being investigated and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of our personnel and prevent future incidents. The safety and wellbeing of all our soldiers is our top priority and we offer support and assistance to those affected by this tragic event.”
