The family of a Clifton woman who was killed while crossing Pickwick Road in Centreville last week has launched an online fundraiser.

The Gofundme page, set up by Lubia Marisol Vasquez Mateo’s nephew, says the family is seeking financial support to cover various expenses, including funeral costs, travel expenses and the medical bills of her partner, Jose Vasquez, who was injured in the accident.

At the time of writing, the fundraiser had raised $2,056 toward a total goal of $25,000.

“My Aunt Lubia Vasquez had such a good soul; she was a wonderful woman with a big heart and was hardworking and dedicated to everything, especially family,” wrote organizer Christian Vasquez. “She leaves behind her loving family and four children who are trying to get through this time of mourning and making some difficult decisions.”

According to Fairfax County Police, Lubia and Jose were walking on Pickwick around 9:50 p.m. on Monday, June 24, when the driver of a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee turned left off of eastbound Braddock Road and struck them.

They were both taken to a hospital, where Lubia died. She was 46 years old.

Jose suffered injuries that police say are not life-threatening, but the fundraiser, launched on Thursday (June 27), says he is “currently in critical condition in hospital.”

Jose is “sad and devastated by the traumatic accident that happened to him and my aunt,” wrote Christian Vasquez.

In addition to the cost of Lubia’s memorial, donations through Gofundme will also be used to cover travel costs to transport her body to Guatemala, Jose’s hospital costs and legal fees “as we seek justice for the fatal accident,” the page states.

As of press time, FFXnow had not received a response to a request for comment.

“The remainder will be used to support my family during this difficult time,” wrote Christian Vasquez. “We sincerely appreciate any donations we receive from all of you. Thank you and God bless.”
