Tesla autopilot leads driver onto busy railroad tracks in Northern California after mistaking them for the road

WOODLAND, Calif. (KABC) – A Tesla driver found himself on a busy railroad track in Northern California while using his car’s autopilot feature.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Woodland, northwest of Sacramento. In a Facebook post, police said the autopilot had mistaken the train tracks for a road.

Woodland police said the information was released only after obtaining statements from those involved.

“We have not verified their accuracy and the traffic investigation is pending,” police said. “We have provided this information as a safety reminder and to emphasize the importance of understanding the features and limitations of your vehicle. As with any type of technology, errors can occur, so it is always best to be alert and attentive.”

Some experts believe this incident was driver error rather than the car’s fault. Tesla provides guidelines and safety tips for Autopilot on its website to ensure proper use.

No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
