F1 champion Lewis Hamilton reveals ‘unfortunate’ incident at Spanish GP that almost derailed race

Lewis Hamilton was excited to overcome an “unfortunate” incident at the beginning, Spanish Grand Prix to achieve his best result of the season.

The seven-time Formula 1 champion wanted to compete on a fairly positive performance in Montreal Last time out, he had a good chance of another good weekend after finishing third fastest in Saturday’s qualifying round.

By securing third place in Sunday’s main race, the Briton secured his first podium finish since last year’s Mexican Grand Prix.

With Hamilton to join Ferrari in 2025his last two results suggest that he has spent his time at Mercedes on a high after enduring a largely forgettable campaign so far.

Hamilton optimistic after the first of three races

But at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya everything could have turned out very differently, because the 39-year-old was surprised by his teammate. George Russell’s Heroic deeds in the first round.

Russell flew off the line to overtake Hamilton, as well as Max Verstappen And McLaren star Lando Norristo take an early lead.

Hamilton had fallen back to fourth place and had to struggle to fight his way back to the front to secure a long-awaited place on the podium behind Norris and race winner Verstappen.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the race, the former McLaren driver expressed his delight at the weekend’s action, but admitted he could have finished closer to the top two without a “really bad” start.

“It was a really, really great weekend,” reflected Hamilton.

“What can I say? It’s been a minute since I’ve had a result like this – I’m very, very happy and feel a little bit light, which is nice.

“I’ve really had a lot of great support here and I feel like that support has only grown over the years. A big thank you to everyone who is here and to everyone who continues to be there for me.

“I had a really bad start, which was unfortunate. I’m not quite sure what happened, but I think I lost some power in the second phase and then I was hit by the Ferrarinot so easy.

“But then to come back from there, I think that’s pretty awesome. I think if I had ultimately gotten the start I wanted, I would have been a lot closer to those guys.”
