Bild quoted a police spokeswoman as saying that the man ran through a nearby allotment garden on Friday evening and began to randomly attack people.

He stabbed three people at the party, seriously injuring one of them.

At around 9.30 p.m., the police were called to the host family’s house on Genossenschaftsweg in Wolmirstedt near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt.

The attacker, whose identity was not made public, was subsequently shot by police and later died of his gunshot wounds in hospital, according to the Bild newspaper.

The party was organised to mark the start of the UEFA European Football Championship, in which hosts Germany faced Scotland.
