Everything we know about the I-75 crash that killed the tractor-trailer driver and injured four others

LA SALLE TOWNSHIP, Michigan. – A driver was killed and four other people were injured Thursday when a tractor-trailer drove through the center lane of I-75 and collided with three other cars, police said.

Here’s everything we know about what happened.

Crash details

The accident occurred on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 4:18 a.m. According to officials, a semi-trailer truck was traveling south on I-75 near South Otter Creek Road in La Salle Township.

As the tractor-trailer entered a construction zone, the driver lost control and struck the concrete barriers on the right side of the southbound lane. It is unclear why the driver lost control, officials said.

According to police, the semi-trailer then changed lanes again, heading south, and crashed into the left central barrier.

Officials said the semi-truck broke through the median barrier and entered the northbound lanes, colliding with three northbound vehicles, police said.

Semi-trailer driver killed, 4 injured

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 47-year-old man from Belleville, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Two people from one of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries and went to a nearby hospital.

The drivers of the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries but refused to be taken to hospital, police said.

According to official information, no construction workers were on site at the time of the accident.

Traffic closure

After the accident, both directions of I-75 were closed near South Otter Creek Road.

It is unclear how long the motorway closure will last.

Investigation

The Michigan State Police, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, La Salle Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance were involved in the investigation.

State police said the investigation is still ongoing.
