Former Eatonville police officer accused of attacking woman in front of her 2-year-old son – WFTV

EATONVILLE, Fla. – An Eatonville police officer is accused of attacking a woman in front of her 2-year-old son.

Channel 9 worked on the story for weeks but did not receive the results of the internal investigation report until Tuesday.

This showed that his conduct was considered inappropriate and that the allegations were true.

The encounter occurred in August in front of a daycare center.

He was then allowed to retire, and the city has since offered the woman severance pay, but she is demanding more accountability.

What started as a routine dropping off of children at school turned into an alleged attack.

Jocelyn Pitts said she was bending down to get her son out of the car when Sergeant Roy Smith pulled up behind her, rolled down the window and called her over.

“He says, ‘What’s wrong with you? Smile, I’m trying to talk to you.’ I say, ‘I don’t want to talk, what do you want?'” Pitts said.

Pitts repeatedly denied Smith’s advances. Then, she said, the unimaginable happened in front of her two-year-old son.

“He jumped out of the car and said, ‘Give me your license and vehicle registration,'” Pitts said. “I said this isn’t a traffic stop, you were trying to flirt and talk to me, I don’t want to talk,’ he said, ‘I want your license and vehicle registration.’

Pitts said instead of Smith taking her to the police car, she was pushed against the wall of the daycare and her hair was pulled.

Pitts showed Channel 9 the injuries she sustained at the hands of Sergeant Roy Smith and the $500 the department offered her in exchange for waiving all claims against the city and employees related to the August incident.

“If I don’t stand up for myself,” Pitts said, “no one will stand up for me.”

The department allowed Smith to retire before the investigation was completed.

“They just said he can’t be rehired,” Pitts said. “That’s not good enough.”

In the incident report, Sargent Smith wrote that there was a violent altercation and a scuffle following a traffic stop.

Eatonville Police confirmed that Smith resigned from the police department following the incident.
