Injuries on fairground rides “no longer life-threatening”

A man and a woman who were hospitalized after a ride malfunctioned at a country music show are believed to be no longer in critical condition, police said.

The Metropolitan Police had previously said the couple, both in their 40s, suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident on Saturday at the Lambeth Country Show in Brockwell Park, south London.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident.

The problem occurred on the first day of the free event.

Among the attractions that could be seen behind a high black fence on Sunday was a ride with a giant frog on the roof.

Signs reading “We apologize for any inconvenience, this attraction will not be open today” were posted on the chain-link fence surrounding the fairgrounds.

Disappointed visitors of all ages could be seen reading the sign and speaking to a fairground employee who informed them that all rides were closed before heading off to enjoy other attractions at the event.

A Lambeth Council spokesman said on Sunday: “Sadly, there was a disruption at a ride at the Country Show last night which left four people injured.

“They are being cared for in hospital and our thoughts are with them.

“We thank the emergency services for their quick response yesterday at the Country Show and for the support they provided to the affected families.

“Following this incident and to allow for a full investigation, rides will be impacted by closures on the second day of the country show.”

Organised by the city council, the show has been held as a free community event in Brockwell Park since 1974.

Every year it attracts more than 120,000 people on the weekend.
