CHICAGO – A 25-year-old California man is accused of stabbing a 71-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon as she walked her dog in downtown Chicago, city police said Thursday.

Wilson Barreno is charged with attempted premeditated murder, aggravated assault on a person over 60, and use of a deadly weapon following the stabbing outside Union Station on June 5.

The victim, 71-year-old Arelene Ardo, was walking her dog Mickey along the 200 block of South Canal Street when she was grabbed by the arm from behind and stabbed multiple times in the back and neck, her husband told WGN.

Ardo said his wife was awake and responsive when she arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 1:30 p.m. after the attack. She initially thought she had been hit until she saw the blood.

She is expected to be OK. The dog was unharmed.

According to reports, two bystanders immediately intervened, caught the suspected attacker, Barreno, and held him until police arrived and took him into custody.

Barreno was arrested by police about 30 minutes after the alleged attack. He is due to appear in court on Friday.
