Gosport man found guilty of raping two women

Louis Charles Cann, 38, was charged with nine counts of rape following an investigation by Operation Amberstone, a specialist rape squad within Hampshire Police.

Cann denied the offences and the case came to trial at Salisbury Crown Court on 13 May.

The court heard that the incidents occurred between February 1 and December 17, 2022 in the Gosport and Portsmouth areas.

In one case, Cann filmed himself raping one of the women in her sleep.

The court heard that the women were manipulated, threatened with violence and verbally abused by Cann, and that one of the women was physically assaulted by Cann when she refused to have sex with him.

Following the trial, Cann, of Rampart Row in Gosport, was found guilty of nine charges on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Salisbury Crown Court for sentencing on 22 August.

A police spokesman said: “If you have been a victim of sexual abuse you can report it confidentially to the police on 101.”

“Not everyone who has experienced this kind of abuse has the confidence to report it to the police.

“There are support services that can offer you help – completely independent of the police – if you need support.”
