Drunk driver leads to fatal crash during Houston police chase | Texas

Houston, TX — A fatal crash that occurred at 7300 Long Drive around 2:40 a.m. on May 28 is under investigation by Houston police. The crash left two people dead, with the identities of the deceased men pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Sergeant D. Hall and Officer J. Baker of the HPD Vehicle Crimes Division reported that HPD patrol officers, while in the area, noticed a silver Hyundai Elantra that had almost sideswiped their patrol vehicle. This led officers to follow the Hyundai southbound in the 1200 block of Broadway, where the suspect vehicle struck a curb. Officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the suspect refused to stop, resulting in a brief pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle struck poles in the 7300 block of Long Drive, causing the vehicle to overturn. The four men in the vehicle were ejected. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics. A second man was transported by HFD paramedics to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two men were transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle involved in the crash was later identified as stolen. The investigation into the accident is ongoing and, as is typical in incidents where one or more people die in the presence of HPD officers, this matter is being investigated by the Division of HPD internal affairs.
