There is a slight risk of rainstorms cooling the Houston metro area Tuesday evening after increasingly high temperatures and humidity spread across the city over the Memorial Day weekend, according to National Weather Service.

Two rounds of storms are possible early afternoon and late Tuesday night through dawn Wednesday, leaving room for storms to produce damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rains. According to the NWS, people should be aware of the weather and prepare by having multiple ways to receive warnings of threatening storms.

Houston faces a slight risk of excessive precipitation and thunderstorms on Tuesday. Galveston County is at marginal risk of increased precipitation.

“Up to 1 to 2″ of precipitation is generally expected through Wednesday morning, but isolated higher amounts of 3 to 5″ are possible with stronger storms overnight,” according to the NWS.

Excessive temperatures and humidity brought extreme heat to the city as agricultural fires in Mexico left a haze in the sky over the weekend.

Temperatures reached a high of 96 degrees at Bush Intercontinental Airport on Monday, but a heat index at Houston’s Hobby Airport reached 115 degrees, due to temperature and relative humidity, according to Space City Weather .

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly during the week into the upper 80s, while Wednesday and Thursday are expected to have increased chances of showers. Temperatures will rise again throughout the rest of the week as rain chances fluctuate ahead of the weekend.
