Prospective student visiting university campus is killed by gunfire as a bystander

Two suspects have reportedly been arrested after a prospective student was fatally shot at Delaware State University in April. According to authorities, this was a shot in the head.

On Monday, April 6, Dover police announced during a press conference that they had arrested Destry Jones, 20, and Damien Hinson, 28, both on murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Camay Mitchell De Silva on April 21st are charged. 18, per CBS News.

According to the release, the two are also charged with allegedly attempting to murder two other people in connection with the shooting.

PEOPLE contacted the Dover Police Department and Delaware State University for further comment but did not receive an immediate response.

During the press conference, police noted that U.S. Marshals, working with other law enforcement agencies, arrested Jones on May 2 in Brooklyn, New York, while Hinson was arrested in Dover later that same day. Their report stated that none of the suspects were enrolled as students at the university, according to NBC10 Philadelphia.

According to a previous report from CBS News, De Silva was staying with a friend who attends Delaware State University on the day of the shooting. She was a computer science major who had previously attended Morgan State University and was considering enrolling at Delaware State in the fall with plans to pursue a career in cybersecurity, according to a GoFundMe set up for her family.

Police say shots were first heard around 1:40 a.m. on April 21, NBC10 reports. Responding officers found De Silva near the school’s Warren Franklin dormitory with a gunshot wound to the head, according to CBS. She was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

“As we have previously released, Miss De Silva was not involved in this altercation and we do not believe she was the intended target of the shots that came from the Breezeway area,” said Thomas Johnson Jr., chief of the Dover Police Department , during the press conference, per NBC10.

Jones remains jailed in New York awaiting extradition to Delaware. It is currently unclear how long this process will take, CBS noted. Hinson is being held in Sussex County on bail of more than $3 million.

It is not immediately clear whether any of the suspects have retained an attorney or filed a plea.

The GoFundMe set up for De Silva raised over $19,000 before the fundraiser ended. The description states that she “had an infectious smile and was a source of joy to everyone around her.”

De Silva was described as “an intelligent and beautiful person who touched the lives of everyone who knew her.”
