Product tanker attacked by armed pirates off Cape Verde

According to a report from the ICC International Maritime Bureau, on May 17, 2024, a product tanker was attacked by pirates 363 nautical miles south-southwest of Nova Sintra, Cape Verde.

AAccording to the report, 10 armed pirates with AK-47 rifles stormed the ship during the voyage, took control of the bridge and forced all crew members to gather there. The pirates began to tie up the crew by tying their hands and legs.

The pirates then ordered the second and fourth engineers to shut down the engines and drift, with the intention of stealing the cargo and bunkers. While waiting for the ship to depart, the pirates stole the crew and ship’s property.

The pirates also claimed to have planted explosive devices at all exit points. They warned that the crew would only be able to get out after two hours. However, upon surfacing, the crew discovered no traces of pirates or explosives.

Before escaping, the pirates caused significant damage to the vital equipment on board. Communications systems, internet connectivity, navigation instruments and key air control lines for the main engine and cylinder oil flow valves were all compromised.

The crew steered the ship safely to the nearest port and no cargo or bunkers were stolen.
