Representatives call on FG to suspend introduction of GM crops – Nigeria – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

The House of Representatives on Thursday called on the federal government to suspend the introduction of new genetically modified crops in the country until a detailed study is carried out.

She also called on the National Food and Drug Administration and Control Agency (NAFDAC) to ensure that the genetically modified foods and crops already introduced into Nigeria are properly labeled to protect consumers.

The resolution of the House of Representatives followed the adoption in the plenary of the House of Representatives of a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, Kwara State, Muktar Shagaya.

Genetically modified (GM) plants are genetically modified plants that are subject to genetic changes and modifications.

Presenting his proposal, Shagaya said the recent introduction of genetically modified crops in Nigeria had raised serious questions, particularly regarding safety, regulatory oversight and the potential impact on the country’s biosecurity and ecosystem.

He said genetically modified foods could be made to contain almost anything, including genes that have higher levels of toxicity and negative long-term effects on human health;

He said: “I am also aware that the introduction of these crops has led to public outcry and serious concerns have been raised about the potential risks these genetically modified crops could pose to human health, environmental degradation and food security.

“I am also aware that the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has been accused of authorizing the introduction of genetically modified crops into Nigeria without following due process and scientific protocols;

“Concerned that these genetically modified crops are being introduced into Nigeria while the said crops have been banned in several countries such as France, Russia, Germany, China, India and a host of other countries in Europe for safety reasons;

“I am also concerned that the long-term effects of GMO crops on human health remain uncertain, requiring precautionary measures due to potential health risks such as cancer, antibiotic resistance, allergic reactions and reproductive problems.”

He explained that the crops could have far-reaching impacts on Nigeria’s food security and may hand control to foreign biotechnology companies primarily focused on profit and cost reduction;

He emphasized the need to prioritize public health, biodiversity and traditional agricultural practices, given uncertainties surrounding the long-term impact of GMOs on health, the environment and food security.

The House of Representatives therefore directed its Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the introduction of genetically modified crops in Nigeria by the National Biosafety Management Agency.
