Buffalo Bills add referee to payroll

Yes, they will pay a former referee. No, it’s not to help them “fix” games.

Are the Bills going to have a referee in their pocket?

We have heard of teams having referees “in their pocket”. Normally that means they paid them. But the Bills are all looking to add one to their payroll.

Sometimes it feels like your team is facing their opponent AND the referees. In the NFL, it’s not uncommon to think that someone slipped a little extra into a referee’s pocket for a well-timed flag or a missed call. There’s no doubt that this is incredibly unethical, but fans think it happens a lot anyway.

That’s not what’s happening here.

Buffalo Bills hire liaison officer

What is a liaison officer and why do the Bills need one? A liaison officer is someone who will assist the head coach before and during games to help him understand what will or will not be called by an NFL official. According to Yahoo, he will advise head coach Sean McDermott and his staff on NFL rules and replay decisions. So whenever there is an opportunity for a coach to challenge, McDermott will have a better idea of the chances of success.

Why do the Bills need a liaison officer?

As it stands, Coach McDermott ranks near the bottom of the league when it comes to successful coaching challenges. During his career, he has only succeeded in 10 of 33 challenges.

This year there will be a ton of rule changes

If there’s ever a year to be on top of the rules, it’s this year. Many changes have been made to the game, including new rules for the entire kickoff and one that will be particularly difficult to master: the hip-drop tackle.

John Parry was hired to help

Former NFL referee John Parry was brought on to the Bills payroll to help the team adjust to the new changes and help during the game with challenges. He’s been a rules analyst for ESPN since leaving the NFL, but will join the Bills this year.
