Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized after the verdict was overturned

Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized in New York just days after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned, his lawyer said.

Arthur Aidala said he was transferred to a hospital in Manhattan on Friday. He remains in prison after being separately convicted of rape in Los Angeles.

Mr Aidala said his client was “something of a train wreck health-wise”.

“It seems like he needs a lot of help physically. He has a lot of problems,” he told AP.

Later, Mr. Aidala said in a statement to CBS, the BBC’s U.S. affiliate, that Mr. Weinstein had been taken to hospital after the New York Department of Corrections determined he needed “immediate medical attention.”

“Harvey is undergoing countless tests and is being held for observation,” he said.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital.

He was transferred to the Rikers Island prison complex on Friday from the Mohawk Correctional Facility, where he had been held since 2023.

Weinstein’s lawyers previously said the former film producer had a number of health problems, including diabetes, sleep apnea and problems with his heart and eyes. In 2020, he spent five days in the hospital due to ongoing heart problems and chest pains.

Mr. Aidala said he would meet Weinstein on Monday before appearing in court on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

Earlier this week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction on the grounds that he did not receive a fair trial and said that prosecutors in the pivotal #MeToo case had called witnesses whose allegations were not part of the indictment against him .

The court said this meant he had been wrongly accused because of previous conduct and ordered a new trial.

At his 2020 trial, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Weinstein’s defense team said the sex between the film executive and accusers was consensual.

Separately, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison in California last year for raping an Italian model and actress at a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.
