Antifa group accuses AfD MP of Stuttgart incident – DW – May 10, 2024

A left-wing group in Stuttgart has claimed responsibility for an incident in front of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament in which two members of the right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party are said to have been attacked.

The Antifascist Action Alliance Stuttgart described the incident as a “creative disruptive action” and claimed that there was “a scuffle between the security service and AfD MPs”.

The group did not respond to police allegations that its members had attacked AfD MPs.

Wednesday’s incident follows a series of attacks and suspected attacks on German politicians from several parties in recent months.

What happened outside the Baden-Württemberg parliament?

According to the police, several Antifa activists held up a banner directly in front of an AfD campaign stand in order to block it.

They said two AfD MPs and other members of the party were physically and verbally attacked by the demonstrators.

The two deputies suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention.

One of the deputies, Hans-Jürgen Goßner, later claimed on Facebook that a woman had hit him in the neck and tried to knock his cell phone out of his hand.

Police arrested two women on Wednesday in connection with the incident and their involvement is being investigated.

However, in its statement released Thursday, the Antifa group claimed that online reports of the incident had given “a completely false picture.”

The group said it was all about challenging the far-right AfD for public space, including through loud protests and blocking its campaign booths.

The left-wing activists said they were harassed by both security forces and AfD members during the incident.
