  • The launch of BBNaija Season 9, which was scheduled to begin just hours before the much-anticipated nationwide protests against economic hardship, has sparked a huge uproar.
  • Angry citizens stormed social media and demanded that the reality TV show be stopped.
  • They argue that the fight against economic oppression should be the burning focus for youth and that they should not be lulled into complacency by entertainment.

A wave of discontent is sweeping social media as Nigerian youths express their outrage over the launch of BBNaija Season 9, which is set to coincide with the much-anticipated nationwide protests against economic hardship.

The protest, which is scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024 and is titled #EndBadGovernance, aims to combat the severe hunger and rampant inflation that the country is suffering from.

In the meantimeThe new season of BBNaija is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, July 28, 2024. The series runs for ten weeks and the grand finale will take place on October 6, 2024.

The coincidence of these two major events has sparked strong reactions among netizens, who argue that the timing of the show is a blatant distraction from pressing socio-economic issues.

Prominent human rights activist Kingsley Thompson, known on X as @Jkings, has passionately criticised the timing of the premiere of BBNaija.

He argues that the launch of the show at a critical time of national activism reflects a disturbing miscalculation of priorities among young people.

Thompson, speaking for many who share his view, is calling for the reality TV show to be suspended this year, insisting that given the severity of the current economic crisis, the nation should remain fully focused on demanding change, not fleeting entertainment.

His words;

The introduction of BBN at this critical moment in our country shows how we have misplaced our priorities.

“I speak for all Nigerians: BBN should cancel its show this year, we don’t want that.”

Others passionately supported his call for the suspension of BBNaija and slammed the organisers, accusing them of deliberately diverting the attention of the youths from critical issues.
