53 people and one child arrested in connection with ‘improvised car show’ in Worcester, police say – Boston 25 News

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – Fifty-three people and one child were arrested Friday night in connection with an “illegal gathering at a car show” in Worcester, police officials said.

Since the spring, Worcester police say they have been responding to an increase in “impromptu car shows” at various locations throughout the city. These events have become increasingly problematic, with officers responding to several dozen incidents involving gunshots, property damage, erratic driving and large groups of troublemakers.

According to Worcester police, officers responded to several calls Friday from citizens complaining about additional car shows and erratic drivers.

Just after 9 p.m., investigators discovered skid and tire marks in the parking lot of the former Dick’s Sporting Goods on Lincoln Street after residents reported a large group of cars driving recklessly and at high speeds through the busy shopping center, police said.

Less than an hour later, police said officers were able to register the license plates of vehicles that had fled a parking lot on New Bond Street after receiving an emergency call about a reported large accumulation of vehicles.

Shortly before midnight, officers learned that the group of motorists had posted meeting locations online, including 330 Southwest Cutoff. When officers arrived, they heard loud music and revving engines, and also recognized some of the vehicles from the New Bond Street parking lot.

Police found approximately 30 vehicles behind a building, and officers arrested 53 people and one juvenile at the scene.

A patrol car and bus were called to the scene to transport the detainees to the police station. Families and friends of the detainees were allowed to drive their vehicles away from the scene rather than having them towed.

“These types of dangerous gatherings endanger innocent members of our community and will not be tolerated in the City of Worcester,” Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said in a press release.

A search of the parking lot found no firearms and no injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
